Last night, gaming’s biggest and successful titles were honoured in a glitzy ceremony in London at the 2018 BAFTA Game Awards.
Note: The award ceremony begins at the 1:33:25 mark.
Staying true to their missions statement of “celebrating and supporting the games industry in the UK and internationally”, over games have been nominated in different categories ranging from narrative, gameplay, music, art direction and impact on society.
Some of the night’s biggest winners include Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Overwatch and What Remains of Edith Finch, nabbing the Best Game award which many critics predicted either Super Mario Odyssey or Hellblade take top honours.
But the surprises didn’t stop there. Divinity: Original Sin 2 knocked off two battle royale titles, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite to win Best Multiplayer while Golf Clash, in the ultimate heist of the year, dethroning Gorogoa in Best Mobile & Handheld award.
But eventually when the surprises mellowed down, titles expected to win pulled through with StudioMDHR winning Best Music for Cuphead and Blizzard winning Evolving Game for Overwatch.
But the night also belonged to Double Fine Entertainment head Tim Schafer who was the recipient of the Academy Fellowship award in “in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television.” Schafer joins an elite group of gaming icons to receive the award including John Carmack, Gabe Newell, Peter Molyneux, Shigeru Miyamoto, David Braben, and Will Wright.
