Getting to the bottom of Microsoft’s latest trademark, Mixplay

Is it a video editor? Or an overlay creator? πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

Microsoft recently filed a trademark for a forthcoming SaaS, Mixplay. Will it be the new video editor to take place of Upload Studio? Or become an overlay creator tool for Mixer streamers? Source: Windows Central/online

Microsoft recently applied for a trademark for a service linked to Microsoft’s streaming service, Mixer, which could potentially be somewhat of a video editor called Mixplay as the tech giant listed the service as “Software-as-a-service” (SaaS) product according to documentation filed.

According to Justia Trademarks, this is what the trademark reads as follows:

“Computer software, namely, digital content assets in the nature of files and applications that allow users to personalize content and games to play, download, share, and exchange; computer software for creating, viewing, publishing, producing, broadcasting, and playing animation, video, sound, and graphics; computer software for use as a tool for personalizing, designing, and updating text and animation; video game software.

Software-as-a-service (SaaS) that allows users to personalize content and games to play, download, share, and exchange; software-as-a-service (SaaS) that allows users to create, view, publish, produce, broadcast, and play animation, video, sound, and graphics; software-as-a-service (SaaS) for personalizing, designing, and updating text and animation; software-as-a-service for playing video games.”

Over the years, Microsoft has had phenomenal success with its Windows and Office products living up to the standards of SaaS products. However, another factor to consider is that trademarks don’t always equal products, for example, Microsoft’s HoloPet, as this development could deter it from reaching its customers or play down what Mixplay could potentially be.

But keywords such as “animation, video, sound and graphics” and the fact that its for the purpose of creating, producing and broadcasting content, we could very well may be looking at a video editor much like Xbox’s Upload Studio or something in the other end of the spectrum, a video/stream overlay creator which uses visual effects to enhances streams.

Judging by how Mixer (formerly Beam) has improved since its rebranding and relaunching last January, we do wish that there’s a glimmer of hope of Mixplay actually materialising in the end.
