Overwatch has produced a plethora of modes since the game’s launch in 2015 and one mode which could potentially be realised came from a fan-made video.
Picture this. Overwatch having a 2D 1v1 fighting mode. Can you imagine it? Can you feel your fingered tingling? Mine are most certainly are.
Last Thursday, a YouTube channel, TGN, posted yet another Overwatch-themed clip but this time, it has most of thinking “what if?”. The channel, dedicated to all things Overeaych from gameplay tips, theories and lore, uploaded ” If Overwatch Was a Fighting Game” much to the massive response and views it garnered. The video has presented some compelling ideas and theories and surprisingly enough, most of the heroes, would do well in a fighting game.
The video, which clearly draws inspiration from the likes of Street Fighter, Tekken and Mortal Kombat, showcases two interesting battles – Reinhardt versus Zarya and Doomfist versus Genji (anyone need healing?). The end result is much more interesting and exciting than what we anticipated.
Since the video was uploaded last Thursday, the video has received over 430 000 views with many commenting that they’ll buy the game and some wishing Blizzard should make this happen.
The creators of the video stated that “it took us a lot of time to make but has been a ton of fun” considering they edited real in-game footage to recreate it to replicate a arcade fighting mode is nothing short of brilliance. They have nailed this as the video embodies the aesthetics of a fighting title from the gauges to the timer, character stances and epic ultimate finishers.
And while we are all hoping and praying that the folks at Blizzard have seen the creativity and ingenuity of this video, maybe someday, we could see an arcade fighting mode…someday…
