The Kinect sensor, Microsoft’s motion-tracking camera that attracted family-orientated and casual gamers back in 2010 has been given the red card as the software giant had announced yesterday that it will stop production of the Kinect.
There’s no doubt the technology was revolutionary back when it launched alongside the Xbox 360 in 2010 but despite that, the product itself has sold around 35 million since 2010. Even when paired with the Xbox One, pricing and features were “the last nail in the coffin” for Microsoft and the Kinect. The software giant was forced to unbundle the Kinect from the Xbox One and developed a clunky device that would be attached to the Kinect for the Xbox One S. The device concept and launch fell flat.
However, the technology will forever live on in its successors, mainly the HoloLens, Windows Hello cameras and the iPhone X. Apple acquired PrimeSense, the tech company that developed the original Kinect sensor, back in 2013 which the iPhone X will be using the same (if not, improved technology) for its Face ID feature. The HoloLens is Microsoft’s AR (augmented reality) headset that uses the Kinect sensor.
Long live the Kinect. May the device rest in technological peace…
