Rockstar Games have never planned a single-player expansion for, arguably one of the best games of the decade, Grand Theft Auto V. The studio has instead poured their focus into GTA Online, which has provided endless gameplay and plenty of viral moments.
Four years since its launch and GTA V still manages to attract players across all boards to dive into something reckless and fun, but will all that fade to black once Spring 2018 comes around?
In an interview with Game Informer, Director of Design at Rockstar Games Imran Sarwar comments why fans still want a single-player expansion and what will become of GTA V once Red Dead Redemption II launches next year.
According to Sarwar:
“We would love to do more single-player add-ons for games in the future. As a company we love single-player more than anything, and believe in it absolutely – for storytelling and a sense of immersion in a world, multiplayer games don’t rival single-player games. With GTA V, the single-player game was absolutely massive and very, very complete. It was three games in one. The next-gen versions took a year of everyone’s time to get right, then the online component had a lot of potential, but to come close to realizing that potential also sucked up a lot of resources.”
While the team have been heavily focused on working on their next project, which the studio had to push back, Sarwar stated that the studio deemed the single-player expansion/s unnecessary, instead use the resources and knowledge for their next project…which is, yes, Red Dead Redemption II.
While the studio still face many problems like bandwidth issues, the studio remains optimistic that it will continue to produce single-player titles with plenty if narrative and great depth.
“Not everything is always possible, but we still love single-player open-world games more than anything. I don’t think you could make a game like GTA V if you did not like single-player games and trying to expand their possibilities!”
With Red Dead Redemption II arriving in Spring 2018, will it outshine its predecessor GTA V in terms of sales, gameplay, narrative and post-launch content?
