One of the main creative driving forces at BioWare, Mike Laidlaw announced his departure from the studio after a 14-year tenure with the studio. Laidlaw announced his exit in a statement on Twitter last Thursday, although not many details have been shared as to what his next adventure would be.
Laidlaw, who joined BioWare in 2003, was the lead story developer and designer for Jade Empire, lead designer/director for the first three Dragon Age titles and the creative director for the franchise. Laidlaw also worked on the Mass Effect and Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood titles.
Laidlaw didn’t divulge into his reasons for his sudden departure from BioWare but has stated that he will be using his free time “reconnecting with all the amazing games and worlds that my peers have created.”
Laidlaw had teased that a new Dragon Age entry could be in the woodworks but has been rather quiet since. Publisher Electronic Arts haven’t confirmed reports that a Dragon Age title is in production.
Laidlaw’s departure comes a year after Dragon Age lead writer left the studio after 17 years. BioWare has yet to comment on Laidlaw’s departure.
