Groove Music is out, Spotify is in as Microsoft will shut down service in December

The tech giant music are exiting the music streaming business

It has been more than two years since Microsoft has rebranded Xbox Music to Groove Music in an attempt to make the streaming service more appealing and accessible to its consumers. However, on Monday, the tech giant announced that they’ll be retiring the service, opting to replace Groove Music with the recently acquired Spotify.

The Spotify app was added to Xbox One consoles back in August following a period where the service was exclusively available for PlayStation. Much like PlayStation disbanding is own streaming service, PlayStation Music by turning to Spotify, Microsft is making the exact same move as Microsoft will close down Groove Music Pass on December 31, 2017.

The tech giant will stop selling passes and all customers whose subscription is beyond the December 31 date will be refunded or receive a Microsoft gift card with the remaining value once the service is discontinued.

However, Microsoft is making the transition from Groove Music to Spotify quite easy for its customers as Groove Music users can move their playlists and collections easily to Spotify. They will also be eligible for the 60-day free trial if they haven’t done so. An update for Groove Music will be arriving to Windows 10 devices next week while Windows Insiders will get to test the update well ahead.

If you have tried out the Spotify app, what has the experience been? And will this transition from Groove Music to Spotify benefit Microsoft in the long run? Let us know in the comments section below or follow Xbox Players SA on Facebook and Twitter.
