Next Rocket League update signals the start of competitive season

Autumn is here for Rocket League players…

There’s no point in hiding how much of a follower I am for the indie vehicular football game, Rocket League. It’s pretty much everything we really sought for, merging two of the biggest gaming genres, football (or soccer) and racing into the ultimate smash-up game. But according to the game’s developer, Psyonix, the latest update could really push the game into another dimension.

Since the game’s release in 2015, we have the studio release three major DLCs and multiple car packs that saw the game merging within other media and sporting platforms including NBA, Rick and Morty and the Batman vs. Superman. The studio launched new modes like Dropshot in March and a basketball-themed mode barely a month later. The studio then rewarded its players with a ton of content for their Anniversary update in July and now the latest update looks to support its esports competitions.

So what can we expect in the next update?

Dropping September 28th, the Autumn update will see Transparent Goalposts added to matches following months of teasers from the studios. This new vision feature will let players get a better view for goal-scoring or for defensive battles in the goal box area. Players who do not want to use this feature can toggle it off. Another new feature from the update is the Directors Mode, currently in its beta, made specifically for those spectating matches will choose the best possible view to watch ongoing matches through an AI-powered virtual camera. This camera, according to Psyonix, can determine future saves and shots on target for better viewpoints for spectators.

The Autumn Update will also mark the start of Competitive Season 6 and with that, Psyonix will be doing a “soft reset” which means players will have to compete in a series of 10 placement matches per Playlist which will calibrate the players’ population for the next season.

New arenas will be available for exhibition and private matches as well as a seasonal map for a limited time only. The Farmstead map, as you guessed, will have the battlelines drawn on a farm in those warm Autumn colours of red and gold. The Wasteland and Starbase Arc will receive some much-needed adjustments and more customisable items will be made available. Rocket League PC players will finally get the LAN support following months of requests to have this feature made available which further expands the Rocket League environment.
