Riot makes changes to LoL’s Rune system, IP, removes level cap

League of Legends (LoL) has definitely become one of the most popular PC games of our generation and it’s easy to understand why. Constantly evolving and expanding, LoL’s developer Riot Games revealed that it will be fixing two of the game’s major systems: Runes and the in-game currency.

Riot revealed to be merging Runes (purchases players make with in-game currency to boost character stats on match-to-match basis) and Masteries (specialised bonuses that let players customise characters stats) into one complete Runes system. This is due to the two systems having problems amongst players as the systems are difficult and hard to understand. This merger will now let players choose from six Runes, all broken down to Keystone, Major, and Minor Runes. This means that instead of choosing from 60 different slots, which only a select few have a significnt impact on your character’s “required” stats, narrowing it down to six means that players can choose from the slots that matters most to players.

The Keystone Rune is the most powerful, but you only get one in battle. This Rune offers big and powerful effects like gaining massive attack speed after taking down the enemy or to summon an ally to deal damage or heal other players when you attack or a spell has been used. While the Major Rune isn’t as powerful as the Keystone but offer audio/visual effects in the game which will offer feedback as to when it happening and how significant the effect is. Minor Runes are lesser, quieter effects that impact moment-to-moment gameplay. These runes offer passive bonuses like help you scale, increase damage or defense, or give you free items.

Available for all LoL players for free to earn and level up as those who’ve spent currency on the current system will be compensated.

Riot has also removed the game’s 30-level cap (and introduces the uncapped leveling) and replaces with a system that “levels up with you”. Riot also merged the in-game’s currencies into one. Influence points (which players earn each match for purchasing items) and Blue Essense (use to craft the ability to buy new champions) will merge into a capsule which is filled with shards and essence which players can use for champion discounts and other bonuses as this helps players to unlock champions faster.

These changes are expected to be rolled out sometime this month.
