Blizzard announce new game mode, Deathmatch, for Overwatch

Well, Jeff Kaplan was right. “Never say never”.

On Thursday, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan revealed in the Developer Update that a new game mode will be coming to Overwatch soon. Aptly named, Deathmatch, this new mode will offer two mode options: Team Deathmatch and Free-For-All which in turn several maps have been adjusted for Deathmatch.

  • Team Deathmatch: two teams of six will compete and the first team to score 30 kills wins.
  • Free-For-All: every player for themselves as the first player who gets 20 points wins (though the top four players will earn points toward an arcade loot box)

It’s worth noting that you can earn points by killing your enemies but if you accidentally kill yourself or fall off the point, you can lose points.

A new map also arrives on Overwatch, particularly for the Deathmatch mode. Chateau Guillard, the former home of Overwatch’s deadly assassin, Widowmaker which also serves as the narrative into the backstory of Widowmaker.

The Deathmatch mode is live on the Public Test Realm on PC as Blizzard has yet to announce a date for the official release of Deathmatch for consoles.
