Since its launch, Xbox has been reaping the rewards when they unveiled the backward compatibility system back in 2015. And even the competition seems to agree.
According to an interview with TIME magazine, PlayStation Europe’s boss, Jim Ryan, stated that while he sees how successful the feature is with Xbox, it’s a highly requested on for the PlayStation.
“When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much. That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?”
To compare, the PlayStation offers its players to play PS3 titles on the PS4 through its streaming service, PlayStation Now. Also, PS2 games can be played through the PlayStation Store.
This is nothing in comparison of what Xbox players have to struggle with. Having access to over 300 Xbox 360 games through the backward compatibility system, digital or disc-based, this system proves to be a successful move bringing in massive revenue for the company.
And while it doesn’t seem like Sony are making plans to host a similar system as PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida was quick to put those plans to bed.”
“Backward compatibility is hard. I won’t say we’ll never do it, but it’s not an easy thing to do. If it was easy we would have done that.”
Oh well, better luck next time, Sony…
